Shopify’s decision to move away from React Native follows a previous shift in 2020. The initial motivation was to eliminate duplicated feature development and enable cross-stack development. The goal was to reduce time spent on feature parity and prioritize value delivery. Native development still involves maintaining software on two platforms, and this cost has not disappeared. However, advancements in agent technology now allow agents to handle a significant portion of the implementation, translation, testing, and review processes. This shift represents a change in the deciding factor, moving away from the previous reliance on separate platforms. Shopify maintains three significant React Native libraries: react-native-skia, flash-list, and restyle. react-native-skia and flash-list are being transferred to new homes, while restyle will be archived at the end of 2026 due to a smaller user base.
