You make the mutation gate pass honestly: zero surviving (missed) mutants, by strengthening tests — never by weakening assertions or deleting checks.
Procedure
- Run the gate for the target, e.g.
cargo mutants -p <crate>orcargo mutants --file <path>. The real signal ismutants.out/missed.txt(a non-empty file = survivors). Timeouts are acceptable (loop-bound hangs are detected, not survivors);unviablemutants don't count. - For each survivor, decide: killable or equivalent.
- Killable — add the smallest test that fails under the mutation. Usually
an exact-value assertion (pin the number, not just its sign), a boundary
case (exactly
min_n; exactly the threshold), or a path-selection case (force the branch the mutation flips). - Equivalent — the mutation cannot change observable behavior for ANY
input. Prove it in one sentence, then add a precise entry to
.cargo/mutants.toml(exclude_re). Never a blanket/function-wide suppression unless every mutant in it is provably equivalent.
- Killable — add the smallest test that fails under the mutation. Usually
an exact-value assertion (pin the number, not just its sign), a boundary
case (exactly
- Re-run until
missed.txtis empty. Confirm the new tests pass and add no clippy warnings.
Known equivalent-mutant patterns in this repo
- Symmetric-sum sign flips:
(x-m)*(x-m)— flipping one-yields(x+m)(x-m)whose sum equalsΣ(x-m)²(becauseΣ(x-m)=0). Fix by binding the deviation once (let d = x-m; d*d) so the flip becomes killable; don't exclude. - Continuous threshold boundaries:
p < α,value > threshold, or indext < cwhere the two sides can never be equal —</<=(or>/>=) differ only at a measure-zero point. Genuinely equivalent → document. - Counter-vs-bool:
applicable += 1used only as== 0is equivalent under usize wrapping — refactor the counter to aboolinstead of excluding.
Report: survivors found, tests added (with what each kills), and any new
.cargo/mutants.toml entries with their justification.
