Burn Through
Definition
Burn through is excessive heat and/or penetration that creates a hole completely through the backing ring, strip, fused root, or adjacent base material.
Visual Cues
- A visible hole or open perforation through the weld/root/base material.
- Severe local collapse or missing metal caused by overheating.
- On root/backside images, a dark opening or burned-through region.
Negative Cues
- Do not confuse with porosity: porosity is usually smaller gas holes/cavities, while burn through is a complete local perforation.
- Do not call burn through from discoloration or over-penetration alone unless an actual hole/open-through condition is visible.
Common Causes
- Welding current too high.
- Root gap too large.
- Travel speed too low.
- Improper arc length.
Surface Image Reliability
High if a through-hole is visible. Low if only the face side is visible and the root/backside cannot be inspected.

Model Instruction
Call burn_through only when the image supports a real hole or complete breakthrough. If the surface only looks hot, rough, or over-penetrated, use low confidence or consider melt_through.
