AGENTS.md
Pomerium documentation site built with Docusaurus 3.8 (React + MDX). Published at https://pomerium.com/docs. Pomerium is an identity-aware proxy for zero-trust access.
Commands
npm start # Dev server on localhost:3001 (hot-reload)
npm run build # Production build to /build/
npm run format # Auto-fix formatting with oxfmt
npm run format:check # Check formatting (no changes)
npm run check # Run formatting and spelling checks
npm run cspell # Spell-check tracked source files
npm run clear # Clear Docusaurus cache (useful if build fails)
This repo does not use the Python pre-commit framework. The CI pre-commit check runs the repo scripts directly (npm run format:check, npm run cspell), and the same commands are available locally via npm run check.
Architecture
Content structure
All documentation lives in content/ (not docs/). The Docusaurus routeBasePath is / and the path is content, so files at content/docs/foo.mdx become routes at /docs/foo.

- documentation: Main docs (Get Started, Deploy, Capabilities, Internals, Integrations)

Enterprise-only sidebar items use className: 'enterprise'.

Commit Messages
Follow the pattern: docs: description of change (#PR) or docs(scope): description (#PR).
Important Notes
- Broken links cause build failures (
onBrokenLinks: 'throw'). Always verify internal link paths match file structure. - Images go in
content/docs/[section]/img/directories alongside the content. - The
content/docs/deploy/k8s/reference.mdfile is excluded from oxfmt formatting (auto-generated). - Prose wrap is set to
never— oxfmt won't reflow markdown text. - API docs are auto-generated from an OpenAPI spec via
redocusaurusat/docs/api/.
Cutting a new docs version
main is the canonical, indexed docs at www.pomerium.com/docs/ (it is the Netlify production branch; only its production build is indexable — see plugins/robots-txt-plugin.js). Numbered release branches are noindex pinned snapshots served at <version>.docs.pomerium.com. Policy: keep the latest stable pin and the one before it live; everything older redirects to canonical docs.
A release cut (e.g. 0-33-0):
- Cut the branch from
main. On the new branch only, overridepresets[0].docs.versions.current.labelindocusaurus.config.tsto that version (e.g.v0.33) so the snapshot doesn't call itself "Latest (main)". The robots plugin needs no per-branch changes — numbered branches build noindex automatically. (Branches cut before this plugin landed carry the old allow-by-regex plugin and need explicit demotion viastatic/_headers.) - Confirm the pin serves — Netlify maps
<branch>.docs.pomerium.comto the branch deploy automatically under thedocs.pomerium.comcustom domain; the GCP docs LB passes unmatched*.docs.pomerium.comhosts through to Netlify with the Host header preserved. src/components/docVersions.json+ navbar dropdown indocusaurus.config.ts(themeConfig.navbar.items[*].dropdownItemsAfter), onmain: relabel the new pin "Latest stable (vX.Y)", demote the previous one to plainvX.Y, drop the oldest. Keep both files in sync. Backport the same dropdown update to still-live pinned branches. Runnpm run format+npm run build+npm run cspell -- "**/*"before committing.- Retire the oldest pin — ops appends it to
redirect_versionsininfrastructure-terraform/terraform/gcp/public-prd/docs.tf(applied via Terraform Cloud), which 301s the hostname to canonical docs.
Verify after deploy: the new pin returns 200 with a valid cert and X-Robots-Tag: noindex; the retired version 301s to canonical docs; www.pomerium.com/docs/ still serves main with X-Robots-Tag: all.
Never merge robots/noindex changes (e.g. static/_headers) to a branch while it is Netlify's production branch — they would apply to the live canonical docs, not just a snapshot.
