You write clean, simple, and maintainable code. You prioritize clarity over unnecessary abstraction because this project is being built feature by feature for learning and portfolio development.
You should think like a senior engineer, while explaining and implementing solutions in a practical way that a college student can understand, maintain, and confidently discuss.
Project Overview
GatherMeet is a student-built, Gather Town-inspired virtual workspace where users can explore shared spaces, interact through avatars, and automatically join conversations based on proximity.
The project is a practical learning and portfolio project focused on building the core spatial collaboration experience with clean, understandable code rather than enterprise-scale production complexity.
The experience should feel game-like while remaining approachable to build, understand, and extend.
Tech Stack
Use the following stack:
- TypeScript and TSX with strict type checking

- Phaser 3 for the 2D world and avatar movement
- Framer Motion for UI animations

- Jest for server tests
- ESLint for client linting
Do not introduce new major libraries unless there is a strong reason.
Development Philosophy
Build feature by feature.
For every feature:
- Understand the user request.
- Check this file before coding.
- Keep the implementation simple.
- Avoid overengineering.
- Prefer readable code over clever code.
- Build the smallest useful version first.
- Refactor only when repetition or complexity appears.
- Keep the app easy to teach and explain.
This project should feel like a real app, but remain approachable for students.
Decision Making & Clarifications
If something is unclear or could be improved:
- Proactively suggest better approaches
- If a new library would significantly simplify or improve the implementation:
- Recommend the library
- Clearly explain why it is useful
- Ask the user for permission before adding or installing it
Example:
"This could be implemented manually, but using
react-native-reanimatedwould make animations smoother. Do you want me to add it?"
Do not install or use new libraries without user approval.
UI Quality Bar
The app should feel:
- game-like
- clear
- approachable
- visually consistent
- polished enough for a strong portfolio project
Prioritize:
- clear visual hierarchy
- readable text and controls
- consistent spacing, colors, and interaction patterns
- obvious feedback for loading, errors, connection status, and user actions
- clear microphone, camera, screen-sharing, and conversation states
- UI overlays that support the spatial world without unnecessarily obscuring it
- layouts that remain usable across common desktop and laptop screen sizes
Use animation when it improves feedback or makes the experience feel more alive. Avoid unnecessary visual complexity that makes the code harder to understand or maintain.
Asset Management
Keep Phaser sprites, tilesets, and other static game assets inside Client/public/. Load them in Phaser through their public paths, following the existing organization under folders such as character/ and kenney_roguelike-modern-city/.
Reuse existing assets when appropriate. When adding assets, keep related files grouped together and update every Phaser loader or path reference if an asset is moved or renamed.
State Management Rules
Use local React state for temporary component and UI state. Use React Context for shared client concerns such as authentication and theme state, and use localStorage only for browser-persisted values such as authentication data and stable local identity.
Keep Socket.IO presence and WebRTC state inside the relevant hooks. Keep spatial world state and rendering concerns inside Phaser. Conversation membership is server-authoritative; clients must not independently choose or override spatial conversation peers.
Keep shared room, player, Socket.IO, and WebRTC signaling contracts in Shared/realtime.ts. Update the shared contract whenever a realtime payload changes so the client and server remain aligned.
MongoDB through Mongoose currently stores persistent user account data. Socket.IO room presence, player positions, conversation membership, and private-zone state are stored in server memory and are lost when the server restarts.
Do not assume in-memory realtime state is durable. If a new feature requires data to survive restarts, discuss and define its persistence approach before implementing it.
Phase Implementation and Documentation
Implement each phase as a focused, usable, and manually testable increment, following the approach used for Phase 1.
Each phase should have its own specification file inside specs/. After implementing a phase, update its specification to document:
- what was implemented
- how the feature currently works
- how to test it manually
- known limitations
- production-related work intentionally deferred
- future improvements or migration points
Do not add production-scale complexity only to declare a phase complete. Clearly distinguish between an implemented learning-project milestone and a production-ready implementation.
Do not describe deferred production requirements as implemented. Keep the relevant phase specification aligned with the actual codebase.
Feature Implementation Rules
When the user asks to build a feature:
- Read this file first.
- Identify files to change.
- Keep changes focused.
- Do not rewrite unrelated code.
- Follow existing patterns.
- Ensure the feature works end-to-end.
- For realtime, spatial, or media changes, consider the effects across the client, server, Socket.IO events, WebRTC connections, and Phaser world where applicable, and keep their contracts aligned.
- Fix errors before finishing.
Component Creation Rule
Only create reusable components when necessary. Ask if unsure.
Important Constraints
- Keep the project understandable and appropriate for a student portfolio.
- Do not introduce enterprise infrastructure or production-scale complexity unless requested.
- Never expose server secrets in client code.

Before every feature implementation:
- Read this file.
- Follow the documented project boundaries.
- Keep changes focused, simple, and teachable.
