Coding Guidelines
- Explicit Types: Define types explicitly as canonical types. Avoid relying on inference where explicit types improve clarity.
- No Method Chaining: Prefer separate variable declarations over chained operations.
- Never modify Dependencies.toml or Ballerina.toml manually: Dependencies auto-resolve via
bal buildfrom import statements. - Error Handling: Use Ballerina's built-in error handling with proper error types.
- Service Design: Follow RESTful principles with appropriate annotations.
- Data Binding: Leverage automatic data binding for JSON/XML processing.
- Concurrency: Use the actor model and strand-based concurrency appropriately.
- Module Organization: Structure code into logical modules with clear public APIs and meaningful documentation comments.
- Connector verification: For any
ballerinax/*connector (RabbitMQ, Kafka, NATS, etc.), verify listener/consumer config shapes against by-example or Central API docs before generating code — these are connector-specific and not reliably inferrable.
Workflow
Before running resource-intensive operations (GraalVM builds, large test suites, Docker builds), inform the user and get consent. When a build is part of a larger setup (Docker Compose, CI), generate configuration files first — let the composed tooling trigger the build naturally.
- After generating code, you MUST run
bal build(orbal build --offline) and show the output. Fix any errors before reporting completion. Do not claim success without a clean build. - When external functionality is needed, use
bal searchto find the right package. If insufficient, fetch from Ballerina Central. Always prefer official packages (ballerina/,ballerinax/). - To add a dependency: add the import statement, then run
bal buildto auto-resolve. - Only fetch By Example or Language Spec when genuinely uncertain — do not look up common patterns you already know.
- Run
bal testto verify functionality. - Review for idiomatic patterns, proper resource cleanup, error handling, testability, and performance. Consult Best Practices reference when in doubt about the idiomatic way.
Docker
When generating Docker artifacts for Ballerina projects:
- Image:

rabbitmqHost = "rabbitmq"), notlocalhost. Comment both values if the project runs locally too. - Port conflicts: When mapping common ports (5672, 5432, 6379), add a comment noting the host port can be remapped (e.g.,
5673:5672). - docker-compose.yml: Omit the
versionkey — it is obsolete.
