Agent Development Log
This document chronicles the AI-assisted development of the TranceGen2 Strudel New project.
Development Timeline
Phase 1: Research & Planning
Objective: Understand Strudel and design a trance generation system
Actions Taken:
- Researched existing Strudel projects (honcoops, eefano repositories)
- Analyzed trance music theory and song structure patterns
- Reviewed the previous Python/Tone.js implementation for "Switch Angel" methodology
- Created initial implementation plan for a browser-based trance engine
Key Decisions:
- Use Strudel Web API for better performance vs. Python backend
- Implement local sample loading to avoid CDN dependencies
- Design a state machine for automatic track progression
Phase 2: Initial Implementation
Objective: Build core Strudel engine with basic patterns
Actions Taken:
- Created
index.htmlwith glassmorphic UI design - Implemented
style.csswith premium dark theme - Built initial
app.jswith:- Strudel initialization
- Basic trance patterns (kick, bass, lead, pads)
- Real-time parameter controls (BPM, filter cutoff, resonance)
- Simple visualizer
Challenges Encountered:
- Sample loading errors with remote URLs
- Incorrect import syntax for Strudel modules
- Audio context initialization timing issues
Phase 3: Sample Loading Debugging
Objective: Resolve "sound not found" errors
Iterations:
-
Attempt 1: Tried loading from
strudel-examplesrepository- Result: 404 errors, samples not at expected URLs
-
Attempt 2: Researched alternative sample sources
- Found
geikha/tidal-drum-machinesrepository - Verified sample URLs with browser subagent
- Found
-
Attempt 3: Downloaded samples locally
- User manually downloaded TR-808 samples
- Registered samples in
prebakehook - Changed bank naming from
808totr808to avoid collisions
Solution:
const strudel = await initStrudel({
prebake: () => {
samples({
'tr808_bd': '808/BD.wav',
'tr808_sd': '808/SD.wav',
'tr808_hh': '808/CH.wav',
'tr808_oh': '808/OH.wav'
}, 'samples/');
}
});
Phase 4: Performance Optimization
Objective: Reduce redundant pattern evaluations
Issues Identified:
- Pattern was being re-evaluated every 100ms in the energy loop
- Caused "took too long" warnings in console
- Unnecessary CPU overhead
Solution:
- Removed
evaluate()call fromstartEnergyLoop() - Only re-evaluate when user adjusts sliders
- Added 500ms initialization delay for buffer stabilization
Phase 5: Advanced Song Structure
Objective: Implement "Switch Angel" state machine
Research:
- Analyzed previous Python implementation's state machine
- Studied trance structure theory from multiple sources
- Designed 6-phase progression system
Implementation:
-
State Machine:
const PHASES = [ { name: 'Intro', duration: 8, energy: 20 }, { name: 'Groove', duration: 16, energy: 60 }, { name: 'Breakdown', duration: 16, energy: 30 }, { name: 'Build-up', duration: 8, energy: 80 }, { name: 'Drop', duration: 16, energy: 100 }, { name: 'Outro', duration: 8, energy: 40 } ]; -
Phase-Dependent Patterns:
- Modified
getTranceCode()to generate different Strudel code per phase - Intro: Filtered kick + pads
- Groove: Full rhythm section
- Breakdown: Silent drums, euphoric leads
- Build-up: Rising filters, snare rolls
- Drop: Maximum energy, all elements
- Outro: Gradual reduction
- Modified
-
Automatic Progression:
- Implemented bar counting system
- Phase transitions every 8-16 bars
- UI updates to show current phase and progress
Phase 6: Verification & Documentation
Objective: Ensure functionality and create comprehensive docs
Verification:
- Used browser subagent to test automatic phase transitions
- Confirmed audio playback and visualizer response
- Verified console logs showing "Phase Transition: Groove"
- Captured browser recording for walkthrough
Documentation Created:

Key Learnings
Strudel-Specific Insights
- Named Exports: Must import
{ initStrudel, samples }explicitly - Prebake Hook: Essential for registering custom samples before engine starts
- Bank Naming: Avoid generic names like
808that might conflict with defaults - Pattern Syntax: Strudel uses a unique mini-notation (e.g.,
"bd*4"for 4 kicks per cycle)
Web Audio Best Practices
- Initialization Delay: Allow 500-1000ms for audio buffers to load
- Avoid Redundant Evaluations: Only update patterns when parameters actually change
- User Interaction Required: Modern browsers require user gesture to start audio
State Machine Design
- Bar-Based Timing: More musical than time-based transitions
- Energy Levels: Visual feedback helps users understand track progression
- Phase Durations: Vary lengths to create natural song flow (8-16 bars)
Future Enhancement Ideas
Suggested by Development Process
- MIDI Export: Record generated patterns to MIDI files
- Preset System: Save/load different trance styles
- Visual Track Timeline: Show upcoming phases
- Parameter Automation: LFOs and envelopes for filter sweeps
- Additional Sample Banks: Claps, crashes, FX samples
- Randomization Controls: Mutation/variation parameters
- Multi-track Mixer: Individual volume controls per instrument
Technical Improvements
- Web Workers: Offload pattern generation to background thread
- IndexedDB: Cache samples for offline use
- Service Worker: Full PWA support
- WebRTC: Collaborative jamming sessions
- Tone.js Integration: Hybrid approach for more synthesis options
Agent Collaboration Notes
Effective Strategies
- Incremental Testing: Test each change in browser before moving forward
- Browser Subagent: Invaluable for verifying UI behavior and console logs
- Documentation Research: Reading official Strudel docs prevented many errors
- User Feedback Loop: Quick iterations based on "no sound" reports
Challenges Overcome
- Remote Sample URLs: Switched to local samples after CDN failures
- Import Syntax: Researched correct ESM import format for Strudel
- Timing Issues: Added delays and removed redundant evaluations
- State Synchronization: Ensured UI updates match audio engine state
