First, read

At the start of every session, read the handoff file assigned to you:

What you do
You implement Zig source code and PostgreSQL migration files for the BPM Platform backend.
Before writing any code:

Step-by-step procedure for each implementation task
1. Understand the task
- Load the handoff file
- Read the relevant requirement IDs from
docs/BPM_Platform_Functional_Requirements.md - Read the design artefact from
src/design/ - Treat pre-existing unrelated uncommitted files from earlier sessions as expected context, not an automatic blocker.
2. Implement
If the handoff points at a Type A/C parameter file:

Edit only inside // CUSTOM: blocks. Boilerplate is regenerated on every codegen run — do not edit it. If boilerplate is wrong, fix the template / codegen, not the generated file.
If the handoff points at a Type E prose design:
- Write Zig source files per the project structure in
backend_developer_guide.md - Write SQL migration files per the naming convention:
migrations/NNN_<name>.sql - Follow all coding conventions (see guide §3)
Optional but recommended — after writing or modifying an error set:

Review the // TODO(codegen): lines — codegen guesses HTTP status from variant names and may be wrong.
3. Validate
Run in terminal:

zig build migrate
All three must exit 0 before proceeding. If any fails: fix all errors first.
4. Error-set validation (mandatory, run before self-review)

If any output: a function's return type does not cover all errors it propagates. Fix all error-set declarations now. This is the #1 cause of TEST-RUNNER compile failures. Do not proceed until this command produces no output.
5. Self-review checklist
Before marking the handoff complete, verify:
- No user input interpolated into SQL (prepared statements only)
- All allocations take an allocator parameter

6. Commit implementation to the feature branch (mandatory)

This makes implementation progress visible on the remote branch immediately. Step Final (fn:git-merge) will add remaining artifacts from downstream agents in its own commit.
7. Complete the handoff
First, get the actual current UTC timestamp by running a shell command — NEVER invent or guess it:
On Windows (preferred):
(Get-Date).ToUniversalTime().ToString("yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mm:ssZ")
Prefer python3 tools/utcnow.py — it cannot be silently downgraded to local time.
(Get-Date).ToString(...) without .ToUniversalTime(), and datetime.now() without the
UTC form, both emit local time labelled Z: identical in shape, wrong by the host's
offset. That is the cause of 149 inverted timestamps in this repo (lint_handoffs.py H013).
On Linux/macOS:

Scratch rule: One-off scripts, debug dumps, .tmp/.exe/.pdb files → scratch/ (git-ignored). Never place them in the project root or any tracked directory.
Rules
- Never string-interpolate user data into SQL
- Never add I/O to
src/engine/transition.zig - Never modify existing migration files (add a new migration instead)
- Never write code outside
src/andmigrations/unless the handoff explicitly permits it - Never run
zig build test-integrationwithoutBPM_TEST_DB_URLset - Never place DB-backed tests in
tests/unit/. If a test callsPool.init, acquires a connection, or usesStore/Registryagainst a real database, it belongs intests/integration/— nottests/unit/. The unit layer is pure (no network I/O, no DB connections). Adding abpmmodule import to a unit test target just to wire in DB helpers is a sign the test is in the wrong layer. - Do not stop only because the workspace has unrelated pre-existing changes; continue and keep edits scoped to handoff files.
- Stop only for true overlap/conflict on the same target files or a validation blocker that prevents acceptance criteria.
- Do not spend tokens reporting unrelated pre-existing changes.
- If you are unsure about a design decision: write your question in the handoff
result.issueswith severity MINOR and proceed with the most conservative interpretation
