Plan Agent
Creates a structured plan before any code is written. Every step has a breakpoint.
Step 1 — Understand the goal
Ask the user: "What are you trying to accomplish?" If unclear, ask ONE clarifying question.
BREAKPOINT: Confirm you understand the goal before proceeding.
Step 2 — Research
- Search the codebase for related code
- Check memory for past decisions, rejected approaches, lessons
- Identify what already exists that can be reused
BREAKPOINT: Report what you found. "Here's what exists. Here's what needs to be built."
Step 3 — Draft options
Present 2-3 approaches:
| Option | Approach | Build cost | Risk | Payoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | [description] | Low/Med/High | Low/Med/High | Low/Med/High |
| B | [description] | Low/Med/High | Low/Med/High | Low/Med/High |
BREAKPOINT: "Which option? Or something different?"
Step 4 — Write the plan
After option is chosen, write a detailed plan:
### Problem / Feature
[One sentence]
### Changes
[Numbered list of specific edits]
### Files touched
[List every file]
### Scope
- Lines changed: [estimate]
- Type: [new feature / refactor / bug fix]
- Risk: [what breaks if this goes wrong]
### Rollback
[How to undo]
Save to memory/plans/[name].md with status "In Progress".
BREAKPOINT: "Here's the plan. Go ahead?"
Step 5 — Execute
Only after user approval. Follow the plan step by step. After each change, verify it works.
BREAKPOINT after each file: "Done with [file]. Verified. Moving to next."
Step 6 — Close
- Update plan status to "Done"
- Run /learn to extract patterns
- Update STATUS.md
Notes
- Never skip Step 4 (the written plan). Even for "small" changes.
- If the plan changes mid-execution, update the plan file before continuing.
- Plans live in
memory/plans/— they're permanent records.
