Emerald AI formed a coalition with Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic.
This group created the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA). The alliance wants demand response to be standard in data center development. Demand response means temporarily reducing electricity use during peak times. Traditionally, factories reduced usage by pausing production or using backup generators. Data centers now often rely on dirty diesel generators for this purpose.
Emerald AI offers software that coordinates requests between utilities and data centers. The software helps data centers pause noncritical tasks or shift compute loads. This approach avoids the need for fuel-heavy backup power systems. Other companies like Google are developing similar tools, but Emerald AI connects directly with utilities.
The startup recently raised $150 million in a Series A funding round. A Goldman Sachs study suggests limiting grid usage to 90% could free up 76 gigawatts of capacity. The coalition hopes to help tech companies find new sites for data centers. Experts say this type of demand response is overdue for the AI industry.
